You’ve noticed the title, right? So there’s nothing left for you to do but to start singing “Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down!” The catchy tune from Mary Poppins, the movie that I adored so much. I believe this song holds more meaning today as an adult than as a child. If you’re not familiar with this popular saying, it was introduced to the children for taking their medicine before bed. Ms. Julia Andrews (who played Mary Poppins-original) asked the children what flavor they’d like before administering their medicine. One by one, they selected their flavor and opened wide to taste the flavor they’d asked for. Just like that, the spoon full of sugar helped the children digest the medicine. And to their surprise they enjoyed it!
This my dear is a simple principal to life! They received what they’d asked for! Euphoria, yes? Ask yourself, what are you expecting in this season of your life? Are you anticipating a great outcome of an unanswered prayer? Something you’ve been dreaming of for quite some time now. I’m sure you are not wanting this thing to end horribly, right? So what you do is speak things into existence. You speak LIFE on that thang and make it come to fruition. That’s what you do. This is my spoon full of sugar in my life right now!
Medicine represents all the trials and tests of your life. All the things that you would rather ignore altogether. But let’s imagine that all of these trials representing medicine were bent pieces of a puzzle. A puzzle that is your life and you need every piece to make it complete. Even the ugly pieces! You’re putting the puzzle together and you notice the last 10 pieces are all bent and distorted. But, you need them to complete your LIFE! What do you do? Bend those pieces down and complete the puzzle!
Long story short, the sugar in this story represents all of your hopes, dreams, aspirations, and your hearts desires. You’ve hoped for so long to have the perfect marriage, the perfect career, or just the perfect life altogther. Along the way, it’s been crumpled and damaged with the medicine of this world. Keep yourself guarded for those unexpected “Jumping out the bushes demons” in your life. Keep your spoon filled with sugar and push towards your dreams! This is the message that I’ve received from this old classic film. Just that simple spoon full of hopes and dreams makes everything else disappear!
